What is Personal Development and Why is it Important?

So, what is Personal Development and Why is it Important? Personal development in simple terms is a commitment to continual learning.

There are many reasons for incorporating Personal Development into your regime. These include: enhancing the quality of your life and those around you, being more productive, becoming a better person, being able to make a difference in your life and the lives of others, and helping you to become a better version of yourself. 

So, what is Personal Development and Why is it Important? Personal development in simple terms is a commitment to continual learning.

There are many reasons for incorporating Personal Development into your regime. These include: enhancing the quality of your life and those around you, being more productive, becoming a better person, being able to make a difference in your life and the lives of others, and helping you to become a better version of yourself. 

My personal journey

Many years ago, I got this inkling that there was more to life and what was going on around me than what appeared obvious. This internal drive caused me to start searching. 

In the beginning, I wasn’t really sure what I was searching for, just that I knew there was something out there that was calling me. 

As a result, I began to delve into the personal development market. In hindsight, I wouldn’t change anything as, for the most part, I think this has been incredibly rewarding and character-building. 

What Was Driving Me

My initial pull towards personal development was an inner feeling that I was missing something. It was as if what I saw on the surface was not enough. There were always things going on around me that didn’t make any sense, or at least not as much as I thought they should. This was a common occurrence in relationships, especially in my primary relationships. 

I started doing courses, watching related specials on TV or YouTube, reading tons of articles and books. At some level, it seemed insatiable that I couldn’t get enough. There are many days with “aha moments,” yet they always seem like something more.

My PD Training By-Products

A by-product of all of my studying was that:

-I got certified as a Master Practitioner in NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming), 

– Studied hypnotherapy and a variety of other healing modalities. 

– I got to walk on fire many times, 

– spend loads of time with great people and 

– I learned some fantastic things (and continue to.) 

I felt incredibly grateful for all the things I’ve learned is it’s added so much additional depth to my life. I also believe that the more you know, the more joy it will bring to you. In reality, this process has added many incredible things into my life. 

Being Committed to Growth

Personal development is not a short-term process. You don’t simply just sit down and read a book, and that’s it; it’s over – I know everything I need to know. 

It really needs to become a lifelong endeavor for personal development to be effective. Getting the most out of the process of personal growth will become something that you will likely do for the rest of your life.

Getting to know yourself:

A lot of what personal development is about is learning about ourselves and the world we live in. In this process, you will learn a lot more about what makes you tick as you will bring a lot of unconscious processes to the surface. Once you bring the unconscious processes to the surface, you can get to know them. The knowledge will help you to transform anything that is holding you back. 

You’ll start to learn why you do the things you do and the driving forces behind what you do. You also get a better chance to understand other people’s motivation.

Being involved in personal development is an opportunity for you to do a thorough self-review to consider what you want out of your life. It will help you determine anything you want to change and what you need to do to get there. This will help you develop an action plan to have a great life!

The good news is you will find this an enriching experience. In the process, you will get a better idea of where you are now and what’s in your way of having a wonderful life. You’ll then learn the skills and knowledge to overcome most problems. You’ll then be able to teach this to others! 

Why You Need To IncorporatePersonal Development into Your Life!

There are many reasons to take on personal development. Here are some good reasons:

Rapidly Changing World 

The world changes, and these days, it changes quickly. The skills you learned as a child will not be enough to adapt and prosper in today’s ever-changing world. Even 10 years ago, the skills you learned are not relevant even today. Just think of it as a new Apple iPhone. You don’t have to wait long for a new one, 

Remember, in the last hundred years alone, we have gone from riding horses to setting tourists in the space. We’ve gone from the telegraph to radio, black and white TV, to color TV, to the Internet, and instant TV. This does not even factor in the long-term effects of social media and technology addictions.

Wow, you could spend your whole day updating your knowledge, just trying to keep up with changes in technology alone. Unfortunately, this will not improve your life as much as you will benefit from improving your life skills.

There Is Always More to Learn

Let’s face it, the education system doesn’t always teach you everything you need to know. In fact, there are many things that the education system seems to go out of its way to not tell you. For example, what did you learn in school about balancing your checkbook, a task that could greatly improve your life? 

Sometimes, you need to learn a whole new skill set as the world changes.

I’m a prime example. Here I am in my 60’s, and I’m learning how to do blog posts and HEY, start up a Tic-Tok channel! It never would have occurred to me in the past that these would be skill sets that would benefit me later in life. But here I am!

You’re going to find out that there’s always more to learn about virtually everything. The hardest thing you’re going to have is knowing what sources of information you should trust, something that’s been pointed out clearly over the last couple of years related to the ongoing pandemic.

You can always improve what you are doing if you have more information.

To Help You Be A Better Human/Partner/Parent/Businessperson etc. 

It’s so easy to think we’re all the same, but this just isn’t the case. It’s also easy to believe that we’re all great people and doing an excellent job for ourselves and our fellow man. 

On the surface, yes, we do look similar. Saying that none of us experienced the same early life experiences. This one fact alone has caused me so many life setbacks. It is so easy to assume that someone else sees the world as you do. 

In a recent relationship, I had absolutely no idea what my friend was really experiencing internally and why she would get upset by the things she got upset with.

I had to spend the last two months reading, watching videos, etc., to educate myself to understand her world model and why she would get upset with the things she did. It was like learning a new language and a new skill set.

We have to face the fact that not all parents are great parents! It is estimated that approximately 40% of children come out of their childhoods (emotionally) wounded. This leaves them with some form of an “insecure” sense of attachment.

With this knowledge, I can see her differently. I see her with more compassion and more understanding. I now understand why she got upset about the things she got upset about and how I could have done things differently to be a better friend. This knowledge inspired me. I also think the more you can learn, the better you will love and support people you care about more effectively.

Overcome Ineffective Parenting

In North America alone, with about 570 million people, this is 230 million people coming out of their childhood with various emotional wounds. I can’t imagine what this cost to society as a whole.

Listed below are examples of areas where personal development goals can significantly improve the quality of your life: 

  • Help to Increase Your Self Confidence. Studies have revealed that an individual’s IQ is not essential for success. Instead, the following three factors are considered much more important than intelligence in determining success: self-confidence, goal setting, and perseverance
  • Improved Self Esteem: 

Your self-esteem or self-confidence is basically what you think about yourself. A great reason to improve your self-confidence is that it is strongly associated with personal success. Hence, one of your self-development goals should definitely boost your self-confidence.

Overcome “fears”/limitations

To eliminate fear and other self-generated limitations, you first have to be exposed to fear to allow yourself to feel afraid and expose yourself to it. Once you are comfortable with the ambiguity and uncertainly of the situation, you can start working your way through it calmly and rationally.

Getting along with yourself is a precursor to getting along with others. You must learn to appreciate and accept your own skills, experience, philosophies, aspirations, and limitations. Having a grounded and healthy focus will help to make you more inspirational and charismatic to others.

If you have a greater understanding of yourself and others, you’ll have a greater chance of overcoming any potential conflict. In fact, you may be able to avoid some conflicts due to your skillset.

The problem many people have is dwelling in the past. We can get dragged back there through our emotional being when we trigger an old unhealed wound. If we really want to be happy, the faster we can resolve issues from the past, the better. This will enable us to stay present and deal with today’s problems today. 

Being Able to Roll With Life Setbacks. 

Adding more flexibility gives you a much greater ability to not take things personally. This in itself will empower you and take away a lot of unnecessary stress. As a result, you’ll be much easier in the backpack friend setbacks.

Manage Stress Effectively. 

Too much pressure can land you up in distress. It impacts not your physical health but also your mental and emotional health. You must know how to effectively manage stress. There are a lot of stress management techniques available these days. So all you need to develop is the willingness to fight stress. Finding the means to tackle stress is not a challenge these days, with help available at the click of a mouse.

Increased Knowledge Helps You To Be Able to Incorporate a “Growth” Mindset. 

The more you read and educate yourself, the more you’ll see possibilities where you may have seen obstacles in the past. A growth mindset helps you overcome any potentially limiting beliefs that you might’ve held in the past. When we have limited resources, it’s easy to buy into our story and stay stuck. By incorporating a growth mindset, you can see setbacks as nothing more than opportunities. 

Increase Your Willpower. 

Harboring strong willpower enhances your finances, health, relationship, professional success, and all other areas of your life. Irrespective of the goals you have set for yourself, you need the willpower to attain them.

Become More Mindful

Strive to become more mindful. It helps you acknowledge the abundance and benefits already a part of your lives. Instead of thinking about the past, which you have no idea of how it will be, you must learn to live in the present and enjoy the moments.

Make Better Decisions. 

Develop the habit of making better decisions in life. The choices or decisions you make determine the life you will eventually lead. Your decisions share your life, so it’s all the more important that, the better decisions you make, the better your life is likely to be.
